Why a taxi to Edinburgh Airport costs what it does

Taxi fares in Fife are set by Fife Council, and the council’s tariff has two stages. Stage 1 is the standard daytime rate. Stage 2 is the higher rate, and it applies between 10pm and 6am or whenever the journey ends outside Fife.

Edinburgh Airport is outside Fife, so a Dunfermline to Edinburgh Airport journey is charged at the Stage 2 rate even in the middle of the day. Under the fare scale in force since 25 May 2026, Stage 2 starts at £4.95 for the first 600 yards, then adds 28p for every 150 yards after that. Over roughly 17 miles, a metered journey would come to around £55 to £60.

A fixed fare takes the guesswork out. You agree the price when you book, and it does not rise if traffic builds up on the Queensferry Crossing or the approach to the airport.

What affects your fare

  • Pickup address. A pickup in Dunfermline town centre, Duloch or Halbeath will differ from Rosyth, Inverkeithing, Dalgety Bay or Cowdenbeath.
  • Number of passengers and luggage. A standard car takes up to 4 passengers. If you have a large group or extra luggage, tell us when you book so we send the right vehicle.
  • Time of travel. Early-morning and late-night transfers are available around the clock.
  • Christmas and New Year. Fife Council’s tariff adds a 50% surcharge on specific hours of 24, 25, 26 and 31 December and 1 and 2 January. Ask when you book if your flight falls on those dates.

Edinburgh Airport drop-off charges

This is the cost most people forget about. The terminal pick-up and drop-off zone charges £8.50 for up to 10 minutes, after a rise that took effect on 18 May 2026. The airport also runs a free drop-off area in the long-stay car park, where you can stay up to 30 minutes at no charge, but it is not directly outside the terminal.

If you have suitcases, the terminal zone is usually the easier option. If you would rather avoid the charge, tell your driver when you book and we will talk through the alternatives. The airport’s charge goes to the airport, not to the driver.

How long does the journey take?

Most journeys take 25 to 35 minutes. Your driver normally goes south on the M90 and over the Queensferry Crossing, then round to the airport at Ingliston, choosing the best route for live traffic on the day.

Times stretch at predictable moments:

  • Weekday mornings from about 7am to 9:30am
  • Friday afternoons when commuter and weekend traffic overlap
  • Sunday evenings when returning travellers fill the roads

A simple rule is to work out when you want to be at the airport, then add 15 minutes as a buffer. For short-haul flights most people aim to arrive about 2 hours before departure, and for long-haul about 3 hours.

8:00am5:00am

Is a taxi better than the train or bus?

For a flight with a fixed time, usually yes. A taxi collects you from your door, so there are no connections to make with luggage and no timetable gaps for very early or very late flights. For three or four people, one fare shared between everyone is often better value than separate tickets. If you are travelling light with plenty of time, public transport can cost less.
